"Eat, dance and walk together", national police commissioner Bheki Cele urged thousand of police officers at a Police Day celebration in Bloemfontein on Friday.
"This is your day. This day belongs to you there is nothing wrong with it. Let's dance together and eat together," Cele told the crowd at Vodacom Park, who loudly cheered the country's police head.
South Africans slept peacefully in their homes over the December period "because of you".
"Somebody please tell me why I cannot say thank you to you?" Cele asked, responding to criticism that the day was a waste of time and money. His statement was met with an explosion of cheers.
The commissioner told the gathering that from this day on they would "rise and walk" to tell thugs and criminal in South Africa there was no place for them. Cele told the crowd to "squeeze" the space for criminals and "expand" the space for law-abiding people.
"Let's eat, dance and walk together," Cele ended his short announcement on the day's purpose, with the crowd chanting "squeeze, squeeze".
